SMS Sender ID Register: Information for Customers

From 1 July 2026, all organisations sending SMS or MMS messages to Australian mobile numbers using an alphanumeric Sender ID must register their Sender IDs in the SMS Sender ID Register. The Register is established under Part 24B of the Telecommunications Act 1997 and administered by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to combat SMS impersonation scams.

If you send messages through Conversify using a branded Sender ID, the following information explains what is required.

What happens from 1 July 2026

Any message sent using a Sender ID that is not registered in the Register will be displayed to recipients as “Unverified”. To avoid this, your organisation must register each Sender ID it uses and send messages through one or more participating telecommunications providers.

Who can register a Sender ID

The following entities are eligible to register a Sender ID:

  • Individuals
  • Body corporates (companies)
  • Corporations sole
  • Bodies politic
  • Government entities (within the meaning of the A New Tax System (Australian Business Number) Act 1999)
  • Partnerships
  • Other unincorporated associations or bodies of persons
  • Trusts
  • Superannuation funds (within the meaning of the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act 1993)

To register, the entity must demonstrate a valid use case — evidence that the Sender ID relates to or is owned by the entity, usually by matching it to a registered business name, company name, trade mark or registered domain name.

How to apply

Applications are made through a participating telecommunications provider that is an originating telecommunications provider. A list of all participating providers is available on the ACMA website.

Conversify is an approved participating telecommunications provider and an originating telco. We are also a partner of a certified telecommunications provider, which means we can facilitate registration on behalf of both ABN and non-ABN entities.

If your organisation has an ABN

You can apply through Conversify, any other participating originating telco, or a partner of one. To be approved:

  1. The person submitting the request must be an authorised contact for the organisation on the Australian Business Register, or be otherwise authorised by the entity;
  2. The person must pass an identification check; and
  3. The person must agree to the Register’s terms of use.

Once Conversify lodges your application:

  • ACMA will send instructions to the authorised person on how to access the Register.
  • After approval, the authorised person can confirm the Sender ID registration.

Once registered, you can authorise additional participating telcos to send messages using your Sender ID — you are not locked into a single provider. ABN entities may also register through a certified telecommunications provider.

Costs

There may be costs for registering a Sender ID, including possible annual charges. Conversify will confirm any applicable fees in writing before submitting an application on your behalf.

If your organisation does not have an ABN

Entities without an ABN can only apply through a certified telecommunications provider, or a partner of one. As a partner of a certified telco, Conversify can facilitate registration — please contact us to discuss.

The certified provider will conduct identity, authorisation and valid use case checks similar to those above. Non-ABN entities registering through a certified provider or its partner will not be granted direct access to the Register.
